Painting a Story with Portrait Photography
by Karl Berch
Candid and spontaneous photographs taken during a session are occasionally the ones our customers love the most. We always ask them to bring something private that reflects who they are at this time in there lives. For seniors it is most often some sports equipment a musical instrument. They also love bringing their pets. We've had everything form dogs and cats to snakes and horses. For more junior kids it's usually a favourite toy that's near and dear to them.
Having some personal items available in a photograph session makes getting those candid's an easy process.
The best way to tell a story about a senior that I have come up with is to get seniors truly concerned in the session. I'lI start by having them show me what they brought and then have them let me know why it's crucial to them. It is fantastic how swiftly they open up when they're talking about something they love. When they are interacting with me this way, they are engaged and relaxed and some great candids and an engaging story can be captured.
With the more youthful kids I like to put them on the set with their favourite toys and just let them play and have some fun. I try and do little directing and if their old enough, I just talk with them about the toys and what their doing with them. After a minute or two they do not even know they are here to be photographed and a great story starts to appear.
Pictures are generally thought to be worth 1000 words. The most valuable thing that we all share on this earth is time. It is the only thing that we can give away and never get back. While we may only be on this earth for a set time, our portraits will live on for ever. Photographs are freeze frames of moments of time you can only get back through an image. By picking up an old photograph you can abruptly appear yourself into a sea of emotion. Is capturing a second in your life actually worthwhile? I suspect the answer is quite clear.
Senior pictures are instant history lessons that provide you with a window to the past. Techniques of life can sometimes be explored in vivid detail with a picture and your imagination. We continually use photos that past cultures made to study what they were like. Do you have a documented history of your life for future generations?
Photographs have a singular way of capturing minute details. Video is lovely , but hails in comparison to the detail you get with a simple photograph. You can capture everything down to the texture of your skin in a photograph. These minor details all help capture the essence of the photograph and moment of time portrayed.
