Some Information About Figurative And Genre Art

by Coleen Torres

Usually, basic artworks like painting and sculpting would actually be split into two kinds namely the figurative and the abstract. Also known as figurative and genre art, this kind is the kind that would depict real objects from real life in a rather accurate manner. Unlike abstract, this type would actually take shape and would actually depict something from real life.

When one would depict a subject from real life, he is not necessarily making an exact replica of the subject. What he is doing is he is actually interpreting the subject and recreating it to how he perceives it. Basically, he is creating a replica of that subject with his own special twist to it.

Now the two most common subjects that would be used for these types of artworks would of course be humans and animals. Although these two are the main subjects used, many painters or sculptors would also use scenery as the subjects or probably even objects. They would virtually use anything for their subjects and recreate them as a representation of their own views of these subjects.

Now just to have a brief history on this type of art, the first of this kind was actually discovered in Southern Germany. It was actually a statue of a woman and was dated back to thirty five thousand years ago. Now when it comes to painting, the first one came from a small part of France and would show animals like cows or other types of domesticated creatures. This is a cave painting that dates back sixteen thousand years ago.

Now this type of artwork would be dependent on certain elements. Since this would actually try to represent actual figures that would come from real life, it is important that all the elements of objects in real life would also apply to this type of artwork. The elements would be lines, shapes, colors, shades, texture, and angling.

Of course one has to be very meticulous with the details because it is actually the details that would make the end product. Although the small lines or small shadings may not seem very noticeable, they actually do make a lot of difference. It is for this reason that being detailed is one of the most important things in being an artist.

Now the Greeks would often make exact copies of their subjects down to the very last detail. This would be in contrast to the Egyptian style of doing things which would entail a good memory and a pair of artistic hands. Of course nowadays, these two concepts have fused to create a hybrid style of doing art that people are very familiar with nowadays.

So as one can see, it takes more than just some creativity in order to create a masterpiece in this category. Now this type of art has a very rich background which stemmed from the Greeks to the Egyptians even up to the artists of the Renaissance period. Even up until now this type of artwork is still growing and evolving.
